India Mandates BIS Certification for Furniture: Key Compliance Deadline in February 2026
India has taken a significant step towards enhancing product quality and consumer safety in the furniture sector. Whether you are a foreign furniture manufacturer exporting to India or a local furniture manufacturer, it is essential to understand a new regulatory requirement that will soon come into effect.
On 13 February 2025, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, issued the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025, making Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification mandatory for several categories of furniture.
The following furniture items must now meet specific Indian Standards:
- Work chairs – IS 17631:2022
- General purpose chairs and stools – IS 17632:2022
- Tables and desks – IS 17633:2022
- Storage units – IS 17634:2022
- Beds – IS 17635:2022
- Bunk beds – IS 17636:2022
Compliance Deadline: 13 February 2026
From this date, only BIS-certified products bearing the ISI Mark – as per Scheme I of the BIS Conformity Assessment Regulations – will be allowed for import, sale, or distribution within India.
Non-compliant goods will not be permitted entry into the Indian market. We urge all manufacturers and exporters of the above furniture products to begin preparations now to ensure uninterrupted market access and regulatory compliance.
