Understanding PFAS Restrictions: Key Challenges for Industry

Public consultation is expected to run from March to May!

Last week, REACHLaw’s expert Tero Koski hosted a webinar for a wide range of technology companies that are members of the Finnish Technology Industries on the REACH restriction of PFAS substances. The topic affects industries across Finland, with experts from over 70 companies participating.

The key challenges identified for companies can be summarized in five main areas:

  1. Materials and technology: Lack of suitable PFAS-free alternatives for critical applications, ensuring performance and safety, and long development and testing timelines.
  2. Supply chain management: Limited information from suppliers on PFAS content, complex data collection across purchased components, and responsibility often falling on the end manufacturer.
  3. Regulatory uncertainty: Ambiguous scope, overlapping or evolving requirements, and increasing administrative workload.
  4. Business impact: Risks to market access, high costs for redesign and testing, and potential effects on competitiveness.
  5. Preparation and awareness: Need for clear guidance, enhanced internal knowledge, and improved risk management and communication.

These are not isolated observations – they reflect a widely shared reality across European industry as companies prepare for PFAS restrictions.

At REACHLaw, we work closely with companies to help them navigate these challenges, prepare for compliance, and contribute effectively to upcoming public consultations. Our goal is to ensure that industry perspectives are considered in shaping practical and achievable regulatory outcomes.
