New Quality Mandate for Steel Industry — BIS Certified Input Material Now Mandatory
A new “Order on ensuring adherence of input steel” has been issued — an important move toward enhancing product quality and compliance in India’s steel value chain.
What’s changing?
Manufacturers must now use only BIS-certified input steel or base materials — as specified in Ministry of Steel order — for producing various categories of finished steel products.
Example mappings (as per Ministry of Steel order)
Manufacturers must use only input materials conforming to Indian Standards as specified in the order for producing various categories of finished steel products.
The order provides defined input material mappings, such as:

- Plain Hard-Drawn Steel Wire for Pre-stressed Concrete
- Indented Wire for Pre-stressed Concrete
- Uncoated Stress Relieved Low Relaxation Seven-wire (Ply) Strand for Pre-stressed Concrete
- High Strength Deformed Steel Bars as input for:
- Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coated Reinforcing Bars
- Cold Reduced and Hot Rolled Steel Sheets and Strips as input for:
- Galvanized Steel Sheets (Plain and Corrugated)
- Carbon Steel Cast Billet Ingots, Billets, Blooms and Slabs for Re-rolling purposes as input for:
- Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels for Intermediate and High Temperature Service
