BIS Releases Product-Specific Guidelines under Scheme X – Are You Prepared?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has recently issued product-specific compliance guidelines under Scheme X certification for several major product categories as part of the Omnibus Technical Regulation (OTR).
Newly Covered Product Categories:
– Metal Cutting Machines
– Machinery for Working Rubber and Plastics
– Semiconductor Converters
– Voltage Switchgear and Control Gear Assemblies – Part 3: Distribution Boards intended to be operated by Ordinary Persons (DBO)
These new guidelines provide detailed procedures and documentation requirements, including:
– Grouping Guidelines for Grant of Licence / Change in Scope
– IS-based Checklists for Type C standard machinery (as per OTR 2024)
– Checklists for Type A & B standard machinery (under OTR 2024)
– Combined Technical File provision for Lead Model(s)
– Defined Risk Assessment types applicable to specific machinery

1st September 2026 – Mandatory enforcement begins for Scheme X Certification.
