BIS Regulatory Update: Hand Tools (Quality Control) Order, 2025 Notified
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has issued a fresh notification S.O. 5596(E) under Section 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016.
This notification supersedes the earlier Hand Tools (Quality Control) Order, 2025, except for actions already taken or pending under it.
Key Highlights:
Order Name: Hand Tools (Quality Control) Order, 2025
Previous Effective Date: The order was first to be implemented on 1st October 2025
New Effective Date: The Order will come into force from 1st October 2026
Purpose: Aimed at strengthening quality, safety, and standardization in the hand tools sector after consultation with BIS
Applicability: To regulate and ensure only BIS-certified hand tools are manufactured, imported, or sold in India as per the revised mandate
This new QCO is part of the Government of India’s ongoing efforts to enhance product quality, consumer safety, and compliance across various industrial segments.
Organizations dealing with hand tools—manufacturers, importers, distributors, and brand owners—should begin preparing for compliance well ahead of the enforcement date.
