Regulatory Update: BIS QCO 2026 – Aluminium Cookware & Beverage Cans
The Central Government has notified S.O. 219(E), issuing the Cookware, Utensils and Cans for Foods and Beverages (Quality Control) Order, 2026, superseding the earlier 2025 order in respect of Wrought Aluminium Utensils and Aluminium Cans for Beverages.

The implementation date has been extended by ~7 months, providing additional time to align with BIS certification requirements.
Revised implementation timeline:
- General manufacturers: 1 October 2026
- Small enterprises: 1 January 2027
- Micro enterprises: 1 April 2027
Products covered:
- IS 1660:2024 – Wrought Aluminium Utensils
- IS 14407:2023 – Aluminium Cans for Beverages
Certification will be under Scheme-I of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
Exemptions continue for exports, pre-implementation stock (with CA certification), filled cans, and limited R&D imports.

Manufacturers now have a valuable compliance window to complete testing, documentation, factory audits, and BIS licensing—without last-minute pressure.
