India BIS: Extended Deadline for Electrical Appliances Quality Control Order
In a significant move to enhance product safety and quality in the Indian market, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has announced an extension for the implementation of the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025 (QCO).
The revised date now stands at March 19, 2026, offering both local and foreign manufacturers an extended period to align with the new standards.
Products Covered Under the QCO
The QCO applies to a range of electrical appliances designed for household, commercial, and similar uses. Specifically, it targets:
- All appliances operating up to 250V for single-phase systems
- Devices operating up to 480V for other systems, including DC and battery-operated devices
It is essential to note that products already covered under existing QCOs or mandatory BIS certification rules are excluded from this order.
Key Relaxations and Industry Support
Understanding the impact on the manufacturing sector, particularly on the MSMEs, DPIIT has introduced several relief measures:
- Extension for MSMEs: Micro enterprises receive a 6-month extension, while small enterprises get a 3-month extension.
- Exemptions for R&D and Exports: Imports of up to 200 units for Research & Development purposes are allowed. Additionally, imports by domestic manufacturers producing export-oriented products are also exempt.
- Legacy Stock Clearance: Manufacturers and importers are permitted to clear any stock made or brought in before the implementation date within a six-month grace period.
Why This Matters
The implementation of this QCO is a significant step towards reducing the influx of sub-standard imported goods and enhancing consumer safety in India. It also supports Indian manufacturers by ensuring a level playing field and reinforces the country’s commitment to quality-led growth.
